Yes! Alexa can make voice or video calls to your family and friends who also have the Alexa app or an Echo device. You just say, “Alexa, call Mama,” and she’ll do it for you — hands-free! (Internet is needed on your Alexa device and your mom’s phone where the app is installed, of course.)

Alexa listens only for the wake word (“Alexa”). She starts recording and sending to the cloud only after you say “Alexa.” You can always mute the microphone on your Echo device whenever you want for extra privacy — a small button on the device turns it off.
