Pick a host
Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant OS, a mini-PC running Zigbee2MQTT, or the Sonoff iHost. Any USB-A host works.

Plug it in (use the extension cable)
Always use the included 1 m USB extension cable to keep the dongle away from the host's USB 3.0 ports - they interfere with 2.4 GHz Zigbee.

Install the integration
In Home Assistant: Settings → Devices → Add ZHA integration → select the dongle. For Zigbee2MQTT: install the addon, point it at /dev/ttyUSB0 (or similar).

Pair Zigbee devices
Trigger pairing mode in your software, then put each Zigbee device into pairing mode. They join the mesh and appear in your dashboard.

The Sonoff Dongle Plus MG24 (Dongle-PMG24) is a high-performance Zigbee and Thread USB coordinator designed for open-source smart home platforms. Powered by the EFR32MG24 chip with 1536 KB Flash and 256 KB RAM, it offers fast automation, stable device control, and a signal range up to 200 m in open space. It includes a 3 dBi antenna (adjustable up to 4.5 dBi) and a 1 m USB extension cable to minimize interference. The dongle supports both Zigbee and Thread (Matter over Thread) connections, allowing simultaneous management of multiple device types across platforms such as Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, openHAB, and more.

It speaks Zigbee 3.0 and Thread, so it handles any device on those standards - Sonoff Zigbee, Aqara Zigbee, IKEA Tradfri, Philips Hue (Zigbee), and Matter-over-Thread devices. Cloud-only Wi-Fi devices won't connect to it; for those, you still use their own app.
Do I need an electrician? ›
No - it's a USB stick. Plug into a Raspberry Pi, mini-PC, NUC, or any Linux/Windows host running Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT.
What happens during EDL outages? ›
The dongle and your host (Pi/PC) need power. With a small UPS on the host, your whole Zigbee mesh keeps running through outages - local automations don't care that the internet is down.
