Open your hub's app (ThirdReality, SmartThings, Home Assistant), tap "Add Zigbee Device", press the sensor's button for 5 seconds.

Insert into soil
Push the probe into the soil up to the marked line. Place near the plant's roots, not against the pot wall.

Set your threshold
In the app, set the alert level - e.g. ping me when moisture drops below 35%. Tweak per plant type.

Pair with a Smart Watering Kit and create a routine that waters automatically when the soil hits your threshold.

Product Details

Plants are honest about what they need, but only if you are paying attention. The Smart Soil Moisture Sensor Gen2 reads moisture and temperature continuously and pushes the readings to your Zigbee hub, so you stop guessing and start automating.

The capacitive probe is the upgrade you actually feel. It does not corrode like the old conductive type, the readings stay accurate as soil composition changes (salinity, fertilizer, pH), and the new antenna design pushes Zigbee range to about 50 metres in open conditions. One AA battery runs for around two years.

Set thresholds in Home Assistant or Hubitat and trigger anything Zigbee can talk to: a smart plug for the irrigation pump, a push notification when the basil dries out, season-long moisture trend logs. If your hub can also share its devices over Matter, the sensor can show up in Apple Home and Google Home.

A battery sensor over Zigbee sleeps most of the time and reports on a schedule rather than instantly. If the sensor sits beyond the typical mesh range, drop a Zigbee smart plug or bulb in between, they double as repeaters and stretch coverage.

Do I need a separate hub for this sensor? ›
Yes. It's Zigbee 3.0, so you need a Zigbee coordinator - a Home Assistant box, Hubitat, SmartThings, Echo (4th Gen, Plus, Studio), eero 6 / 6 Pro, or any Zigbee-compatible hub.
Will this work with Apple Home or Google Home directly? ›
Not directly. The sensor speaks Zigbee, so it joins a Zigbee hub first. To see it in Apple Home or Google Home, that hub also has to share its devices over Matter - check your hub's own Matter support.
How long does the battery last? ›
Around 2 years on one AA in normal indoor conditions. Cold outdoor use shortens that - plan to swap annually if the sensor stays outside year-round.
Why doesn't Alexa show moisture readings? ›
Alexa's Zigbee implementation doesn't expose humidity values. The sensor still pairs and works in Alexa routines, but live moisture isn't shown in the Alexa app.
Can I install it outdoors year-round? ›
Yes, but battery life shortens in cold weather. Check the battery every 6 months for outdoor placement.
What if my hub is too far away? ›
Add a Zigbee repeater. Any mains-powered Zigbee device (smart plug, bulb) extends the mesh - most setups need one repeater per ~15-20 metres.
